Healthcare Information

November 14, 2008

Healthcare is the general term used for the entire area of prevention, intervention and cure of illness and disease using the services of medical experts and resources. The World Health Organizations definition is a little different and refers more to the prevention of sickness and facilities to encourage this, in addition to intervention that should be available to a single individual as well as a whole population. Any collective group of medical professionals and facilities dedicated to providing this would be termed a healthcare system.

Healthcare

Early on before the phrase health care was common, the English speaking countries called it just plain medicine or more usually the health sector but it still meant the provision of a health service to treat and cure illness and disease. Even in most developing countries there is a form of healthcare provision for everyone whether they are in a position to pay or not. It was the United Kingdom that pioneered the first population based health care system back in 1948 called The National Health Service run by each successive government.

A system second to this, according to The World Health Organization is the one initiated in Italy where a compulsory system of insurance which the government funds, but at a relatively low cost per individual, is used. Other examples are Medicare in Australia, established in the 1970s by the Labor government, and by the same name Medicare in Canada, established between 19.6 and 1984. The main countries that do not support this general healthcare service are The United States and South Africa, although they are making reforms to their health service. people who work in healthcare include all professionals whose job it is to preserve life, treat and cure sickness and try to improve the health of individuals. The collective term for this is the healthcare industry but the word industry may not necessarily be the best one to use.

The health care industry is one of the world’s biggest and fastest-growing industries generally consuming at least ten percent of gross domestic product of most developed nations, healthcare can form a large part of a country’s economy. America has seen some of the largest rises and the figures in 2006 are expected to be the same as 2003 with over 15 percent of GDP - it is presently the biggest in the world but the increase by 2016 is anticipated to be almost 20 percent.

presently in the America over 180 million citizens are looking for health care and it will be no surprise to learn that it is top of all concerns for those in and seeking employment. The costs of healthcare in The United States have risen so much that General Motors had looked at filing bankruptcy due to the increasing healthcare costs wearing down its auto manufacturing division. In this instance some hard Union negotiations, compromises and the closing down of their finance arm GMAC meant this action wasn’t needed.

Workers in America place this as their number one priority when looking for a possible employer and often will move to a lower paid position just to better their medical care. Maybe it is time healthcare was looked at in a different way and perhaps called health preservation with an accent on fitness and health to ease the need for a top heavy healthcare system which is becoming a worldwide issue.
